With events in Ukraine becoming ever more serious, we at CfE felt that we simply had to do something to demonstrate our solidarity with the people of the Ukraine and Ukrainians in Cornwall and throughout Europe. After rejecting several other ideas we decided that a vigil on Sunday was the best action we could take and set about putting the message out on social media as far and wide as possible. Despite the short notice, about 200 people turned out on a chilly Sunday afternoon in front of Truro cathedral to offer support and love for Ukrainians everywhere. After passionate and moving speeches from Tom Scott, several local Ukrainians like Inna and her young daughter Melissa, and a prayer from the Dean of Truro, a collection was taken which raised over £1,200 for the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain. We have also been very pleased to welcome several new members to CfE in the last few days.
Tragically, the great wave of emotion and support for Ukraine which has swept Europe fell on deaf ears and as I write, Putin is continuing his murderous assault on that country and its people. We can only hope fervently for peace, and peace soon.
