Even your hardworking newsletter team takes a break occasionally, and it will come as no surprise to those who know me that part of my holiday was spent in Venice, where over the past few years I have been lucky enough to get to know some of the locals. One evening I was invited by a friend to an event that she was helping to organise in the newly renovated headquarters of the select company, which was hosting a fund raiser for “La Caminata Rosa” (literally the pink pathway) to raise money for a state of the art scanner for breast cancer diagnosis at the local hospital.

I soon found myself being roped in to talk to any English-speaking passersby and suddenly it hit me – I had been invited to take part in the Venetian equivalent of a street stall! This being Venice, it was more a “canal stall” but there were quite a lot of English and North American tourists around and when a group from Cornwall strolled past I don’t know which of us was more surprised, them or me!

I was thrilled to learn later that as a result of the evening over €1,000 was raised, but, as with all street stalls, the boost to morale and the feeling of working together for a common goal was even more important.
